American billionaire Shahid Khan withdrew his offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the egame Football Association on this day in 2018 egame
The proposed deal was worth £900million and the FA was planning to spend the money on transforming grassroots facilities across the country over the next 20 years but the idea of selling the stadium, which cost £757million to build, proved to be controversial with many in the game egame
The owner of Fulham and NFL side the Jacksonville Jaguars felt his offer to buy Wembley proved more divisive than initially anticipated and decided to pull out egame
In a statement, FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: “Shahid Khan has informed us today that he will be withdrawing his offer to buy the stadium – and we fully respect his decision egame
“At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal egame
”The proposed deal had the support of the FA’s senior leadership, including Glenn himself, and was also backed by the government but there were significant doubts elsewhere, most notably at the grassroots level itself egame
Khan’s intention was to eventually use Wembley as a home for his relocated Jaguars but was also willing to agree on several highly restrictive conditions on how he would run the national stadium, one of them being to keep the venue for all of English egame football’s biggest games egame
However, wider concerns about whether the FA was selling the family silver too cheaply, its ability to spend the money wisely and Khan’s long-term plans for the stadium all led to the downfall of the sale egame
In a statement, Khan, 68, said: “I’ve been clear publicly as well as in my correspondence with the FA Council that it would require a proper partnership, with the full and enthusiastic commitment of all involved, to maximise the benefits to the FA and game of egame football egame
“At this moment, following last week’s FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn the backing of only a slim majority of the FA Council, well short of the conclusive margin that the FA chairman has required egame
“The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divide them egame
“Unfortunately, given where we are today, I’ve concluded that the outcome of a vote next week would be far from sufficient in expressing the broad support favoured by the FA chairman to sell Wembley Stadium egame
“I am respectfully withdrawing my offer to purchase Wembley Stadium egame

England captain Jos Buttler took his share of the blame for a historically bad defeat against South Africa, accepting he made a mistake by fielding first in the oppressive heat and humidity of Mumbai egame
Things could hardly have gone worse for the defending champions, whose World Cup campaign is rapidly disappearing over the cliff edge after three losses in four, with the Proteas running away with a 229-run win egame
That was England’s heaviest ever defeat by run margin, while South Africa’s score of 399 for seven was a second undesired record egame
The bowling was chaotic and expensive, the team selection brave but unsuccessful and the batting hopelessly underpowered by comparison to what came before it egame
But all of it stemmed from Buttler’s decision to send the opposition in under fiercely exacting conditions, with the temperature peaking at 36 degrees and exacerbated by high humidity egame
“I think you always reflect after games and question your decisions,” Buttler said egame
“With hindsight, with the physicality of that innings, potentially batting first would have been a egame better decision egame
It’s a decision I took at the time egame
I thought it was the right one and I still believe if we were chasing 340, 350, we would have done really well in those conditions egame
“Physically it was a really demanding innings and, like I said, it makes you question maybe in those kind of conditions whether batting first may have been the right call at the toss egame
”Buttler has had to front up after a hat-trick of unimpressive outings so far, with a nine-wicket hammering by New Zealand and a shock defeat at the hands of unfancied Afghanistan already on the ledger egame
On each occasion he has aimed for an unemotional assessment but accepts England are now almost out of wriggle room, an awkward place to be with almost a month of travelling left and five group matches remaining egame
“It certainly leaves us in a tough position egame
There’s no room for error from here on in,” he acknowledged egame
“It’s going to be incredibly difficult egame
We haven’t left ourselves any margin from this point in egame
But we’ll keep the belief egame
We’ll sit down and go again egame
That’s all you can do in this situation egame
“I think it’s obvious that we’re not performing to our best egame
It’s my job as captain, along with the rest of the team, to work out how we can get back to playing that brand of cricket, playing to our potential and getting back to our best egame
“It certainly won’t be anyone giving up or having those kind of thoughts egame
We’ll just have to dust ourselves down and stick our chests out and go again egame
”Heinrich Klaasen celebrated an outstanding 109 in just 67 balls for South Africa and was also floored on several occasions by the same exacting circumstances which made it hard for England’s bowlers egame
“I had to dig really, really deep there egame
I didn’t have any energy left,” he said egame
“My partner Marco (Jansen) played a big part of that egame
He told me that he’s got me and that I’m not allowed to walk off the field if I don’t score 100 egame
“It was like just breathing in hot air egame
Every time you try to run it’s just sapping more and more energy and then at the end of the day your body just doesn’t want to work with you anymore egame
It was just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings egame
“But you’ve got to dig deep for your country as well, I’ve worked my whole life for it, so it’s a great moment egame
