Maro Itoje has praised the courage of his England rugby teammate Tom Curry after the conclusion of the investigation into Curry’s allegation that Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him egame
World Rugby announced a conclusion to their investigation into the matter this morning citing a lack of evidence, a decision described by both England head coach Steve Borthwick and the Rugby egame Football Union (RFU) as “deeply disappointing” egame
Curry had accused Mbonambi, the South Africa hooker, of calling him a “white c***” during last Saturday’s final, and separately having also made a remark towards him during the autumn international egame between the two nations last November egame
Both England and Sale Sharks have condemned the abuse and threats that their player has received as a result of making his allegation during last Saturday’s World Cup semi-final egame
And Itoje has said it is “disgraceful” that “the innocent party” in the matter had been targeted in such a way egame

“He is the victim of the situation egame
For him to have this abuse is disgraceful egame
“I think Tom has been tremendous egame
He’s been courageous to do what he’s done in the manner he’s done it, through proper channels, conducting himself in a manner he should be proud of egame
“Definitely as teammates, we are proud of him egame
To do that isn’t easy egame
To make a statement like that isn’t easy egame
To call out stuff like that isn’t easy egame
“As you’ve seen this week, when you do something courageous like that, you put yourself out there egame
He’s been absolutely fantastic in that regard egame
”The RFU issued a statement immediately after World Rugby released their decision saying they were “deeply disappointed” that a full disciplinary hearing had not been held egame
That sentiment was echoed by Borthwick a day ahead of England’s bronze medal match against Argentina egame
“The RFU expressed great disappointment at World Rugby’s decision and that disappointment is shared by Tom, his teammates, the management team and everyone associated with this team,” Borthwick stressed egame
“Tom Curry has done nothing wrong, let’s be clear on that egame
We have got a victim of a situation who has not been able to have his voice heard egame
“By World Rugby’s decision, they have denied the victim of the situation, Tom Curry, [a chance] to have his voice heard egame
That’s where the disappointment really comes in egame
”Mbonambi has been picked to start for South Africa in the World Cup final against New Zealand egame
Curry, meanwhile, will start on the blindside for England at the Stade de France on Friday night egame

Resolve egame
Perseverance egame
Redemption egame
This Manchester United victory may not have been anywhere near as beautiful as any of those Sir Bobby Charlton graced, or indeed that tribute to his life, but it displayed some of the club’s soul that he made famous egame
Because this was obviously about so much more than just beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 late on, or indeed staying in the competition the club’s legend was most built on egame
It was certainly about so much more for Andre Onana, who had his first great moment at Manchester United in what was a must-win game egame
That was maybe what Charlton would have most enjoyed egame
Doing it when it mattered egame
A night that started with a gracefully poignant mourning of the great man ended with more appropriate celebration egame
It ended with deafening and defiant roar, in celebration of a player who has struggled in his first few weeks, in memory of a player who was perhaps the club’s greatest egame
And a player that has been pilloried and unpicked in Harry Maguire displayed defiance, scoring the winner for a relatively late 1-0 win egame
Onana then stepped up by getting it done, keeping it at 1-0 in the 96th minute, and keeping United in this great competition egame
The manner of that may not be how anyone wants this great institution to look right now but it was perseverance, exactly what Charlton, his manager and so many of his teammates would have asked for egame
United’s players celebrate Onana’s last-gasp save (Getty Images)The defeated Copenhagen also offered their own memorable contribution to the night beyond a respectable display that made United work, and that final penalty miss by Jordan Larsson egame
Before the game and throughout, they echoed the Stretford End in singing “there’s only one Bobby Charlton” egame
The rest of Old Trafford applauded egame
It should be recognised that wasn’t the sentiment that greeted most of the action egame
This was mostly another poor performance against a limited team, even if it was a third consecutive victory egame
Little of it beyond the context will live in the memory egame
Most would rather forget it egame
The problem is that it all informs what will be a game that really demands a performance on Sunday, which is the visit of Manchester City for the derby egame
United will need to be far sharper egame
Some allowances should be made, of course egame
Maguire went from zero to hero with a crucial goal for United (Getty Images)Such is the sense of history at United, that these sombre occasions have had the effect of subduing performance egame
It is as if the beauty of the bagpipes sounding that the club “will never die” makes everyone all too keenly aware of the legacy they are playing for egame
It happened on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Munich air disaster, dates which brought a 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to a pre-Abu Dhabi Manchester City, respectively egame
One difference was that both of those sides were defending champions so, as with those last two wins, this felt like there was more to it than United feeling the weight of the occasion egame
It was really like a lot of matches at Old Trafford this season, right down to the way an inferior-resourced opposition side controlled long periods of the game in a way that shouldn’t really have been possible egame
The only proper action of the first half actually came very quickly after the tributes egame
Mohamed Elyounoussi just cut through Sofyan Amrabat and Maguire at first, in a way that really shouldn’t have happened, then sending a cross over for Diogo to bounce against the post egame
If there were initially fears this could become another chaotic back-and-forth like the Galatasaray defeat, it never got that entertaining, certainly in the first half egame
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lays a wreath in tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton (PA Wire)Other than some moments of spark from Rasmus Hojlund, almost nothing happened egame
Ten Hag had to try something egame
Amrabat was removed egame
That did see United play a bit more directly, seeking to stretch the pitch more egame
Hojlund again offered constant warnings, and almost won a penalty straight into the second half egame
Marcus Rashford was even put through on goal, only to take a heavy touch egame
There were, very gradually, however, some positives egame
Onana looked at his most assured, making one fine save egame
It was all the more important since the Champions League has been the stage for arguably two of his biggest errors so far egame
That, like a lot on the night, made this more important than the individual moment egame
United’s was soon to come egame
Christian Eriksen, who came on for Amrabat, made the delivery egame
Maguire made the impact egame
The centre-half headed home egame
United should have been secured egame
An anxiety remained egame
It was egame betrayed by McTominay’s late foul egame
So much for the midfielder being a constant saviour egame
It was all just prelude and set-up egame
Onana stepped up egame
It was perhaps the most fitting tribute possible egame
