Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend football
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin football
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] football
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 football

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations football
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration football
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed football
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points football
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict football
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong football
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks football

2mm and must be uniform when new football
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes football
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race football
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race football

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 football

9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear football
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed football
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 football

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model football
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start football
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end football
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico football

Rugby beauty comes in many forms – as New Zealand showed against Argentina football
Perhaps it is Will Jordan that takes your fancy, his 31 tries in 30 Tests rugby’s equivalent of the golden ratio football
Perhaps you are entranced by Mark Tele’a, sinewy and sinuous, gliding in and out of contact like an electric eel football
Or could it be Richie Mo’unga and his teasing grin, most often flashed at a grasping Argentine after a coquettish click of the heels on a night where the fly half seemed to step into space at will football
But it was the All Blacks’ muscle-men and their rugged charm that laid the foundations for the decorative touches elsewhere football
And to think New Zealand had entered this tournament with questions about their ability to assert themselves up front; this was a frightening display of forward strength, leaving Argentina’s Rugby World Cup dreams buried beneath the black mass football
The Pumas had arrived in Paris with the most lineout drive metres per match of any team at the tournament – the tight tussles are meant to be their strength football
In Marcos Kremer and Juan Martin Gonzalez, they had two long-limbed flankers, ready to aid their second rowers in getting up in the air football
The good news is that Argentina fared football better than New Zealand’s other opponents at this World Cup football
Before tonight, New Zealand’s hookers had missed just a single lineout throw all tournament; they twice failed to find their intended recipient in the semi-final football
The intention was to pull the platform from beneath the All Blacks, a conscious decision made to avoid giving New Zealand lineout ball with which to work: just one of Argentina’s ten first-half kicks was directed for touch football
Veteran lock Sam Whitelock helped lay the foundations for New Zealand’s win (Getty Images)It mattered not football
With the Pumas struggling for discipline and the whistle of referee Angus Gardner providing much of the soundtrack amidst an absence of atmosphere in a one-sided contest, New Zealand could punt for the sidelines at their leisure football
The intent was set from the All Blacks’ first mauling opportunity, a locomotive that chugged out of the station despite Argentina’s desperate attempts to halt it football
Gardner whistled, and New Zealand marched on, their forwards next punching their tickets down in Argentina’s 22 football
Same plan, same result, the Pumas infringing as New Zealand drove again football
Gardner called Montoya over for a dressing down, pointing out five penalisable offences in two maul movements football
Already Argentina had been warned football
In piled Puma paws, swiping at the buried ball and managing to halt the drive football
But that only left space elsewhere, Jordan all alone in open pasture for the gentlest of trots to the line football
The wing would add two more tries, drawing him level with Bryan Habana, Julian Savea and Jonah Lomu on a record eight scores at a single men’s World Cup – illustrious company football
Will Jordan scored a hat-trick at the Stade de France (Getty Images)Credit must go to Jason Ryan, the All Blacks’ unheralded assistant coach, plucked from the Crusaders a year and a half ago football
The arrival of former Ireland boss Joe Schmidt last summer was much trumpeted, the attacking schemer oft mentioned as a reason behind New Zealand’s resurgence, but Ryan, who arrived at the same time, has been just as crucial football
Their heavy metal mauling with the ball is matched by defensive set-piece steel without it football
It must also be said that Ryan is working with the right raw materials football
Brodie Retallick watched much of this game perched on the pine, happy to let old chum Sam Whitelock stoke the engine room coals alongside Scott Barrett football
As a locking triumvirate, there have surely been none football better; this was a parade of puissance, with the scrum also in outstanding working order football
Four years ago at this stage, Steve Hansen made an error football
Fearing England’s lineout threat, he installed Barrett on the blindside ahead of the semi-final, reshaping the back row football
The many moving pieces jarred against one another, the lock-slash-six an early sacrifice on a night where England brought the All Blacks crashing down football
New Zealand’s scrum also proved effective (AFP via Getty Images)Barrett has since kicked on, now top dog in a second-row room that contains two all-time greats football
The trio are tireless draft horses but have a few dressage flicks and tricks, too football
Whitelock’s deft pull-back pass at the line was a vital component in New Zealand’s first two ornately-constructed scores; the bulkiest Barrett brother joined his siblings in a couple of open-field gallops football
Retallick arrived on the hour, one centurion replacing another as Whitelock took leave football
Barrett departed five minutes after, unable to resist a dip in the cookie jar from a supine position, a cynical intervention rightly drawing a card football
It was about the only blot on a night of All Black might, with New Zealand even opting to leave Barrett off and play the final five minutes with 14 men in another show of superiority football
A tilt at a record fourth men’s World Cup crown awaits football
