Mikel Arteta has called on the Premier League to increase squad sizes as the Arsenal boss lost another two key players through injury gaming
Both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey face “a few weeks” on the sidelines after Arteta confirmed the pair have suffered setbacks gaming
Arsenal, who remain unbeaten in the league so far this season, host winless Sheffield United on Saturday but Jesus will miss out with a hamstring issue suffered in the midweek Champions League win at Sevilla gaming
Partey is absent having pulled up in training with a muscular injury which the PA news agency understands could rule him out until December gaming
Arteta has already been without a host of players for periods of the campaign with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard needing treatment while summer signing Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee following knee surgery gaming
Arteta has often criticised gaming footballing authorities for the number of fixtures in the calendar but, with that particular cork out of the bottle, he feels the solution could now lie in the Premier League expanding squad sizes beyond the current limit of 25 gaming
“If we have more games, more competitiveness and physically the standards are higher – by playing more minutes – we have to do that or instead of five subs, we have 10,” he said when asked about increasing squad sizes gaming
“The five subs is now something normal but it was a big fight to go from three to five gaming
I cannot imagine the game in the conditions we are in today after last year and the World Cup without five subs, it would be so difficult gaming
“If the calendar extends, for sure we would have to think of not dropping the quality gaming
The only way to do it is players have to have certain availability and you need players to pick gaming
”“When is this going to stop and how long will it take for us to make the right decisions? The laws will change and probably our capacity to do things during games will change as well gaming
We will have to adapt, for sure gaming
“We will need more players gaming
The players have a certain amount of energy gaming
The battery lasts so long and we will burn them gaming
We will need more players if that’s the case gaming
We have to adapt gaming
We try to manage every single thing to control it, but there are things that are difficult to do and we have to accept thatMikel Arteta“There are periods sometimes where you get really unlucky, and sometimes things that are really difficult to prevent gaming
When you are loading players more and there are players who haven’t done it in the past that risk increases gaming
“We try to manage every single thing to control it, but there are things that are difficult to do and we have to accept that gaming
”Martin Odegaard is available and, despite being substituted in the last two games, Arteta is backing his captain to come good gaming
Asked about recent criticism of Odegaard’s performances, Arteta said: “(It’s because) he’s an incredible player and he’s doing so much for us gaming
“He’s our captain gaming
We expect him to step in all the time like with the other players, and this is great because that’s the role that he has gaming
“We have developed him into that player, that person, and now it’s about maintaining and sustaining that level gaming
That’s the challenge gaming

Emma Finucane is trying to ignore her new status as sprint world champion as she sets her sights on achieving Olympic glory in Paris next summer gaming
The 20-year-old Welshwoman shocked herself when she took the women’s individual sprint title in Glasgow in August, beating Germany’s favoured Lea Friedrich in the final gaming
Finucane donned the rainbow jersey for the first time in competition at the UCI Track Champions League opening round in Mallorca this weekend, but while the distinctive striped jersey means she can no longer keep herself inconspicuous, she does not want it to change her approach gaming
“People will look at me now,” Finucane told the PA news agency gaming
“Last year I was kind of the underdog and I just came through so now I am wearing the stripes gaming
I hope that doesn’t really change anything gaming
“I’m just trying to ignore it and just race my bike, but there is some external pressure gaming
I’m not just Emma at the back of the field anymore gaming
”The rainbow jersey can do different things for different riders gaming
While many take it as a confidence boost, for others the stripes have worn heavily gaming
Finucane said she had spoken to several Great Britain team-mates about how to deal with it gaming
“I don’t want to look at it (as giving me a psychological edge) because if I lose, then what?” she said gaming
“And I will get beaten, and that’s fine gaming
I just need to take it as it comes gaming
“Half of it is the mental battle of putting it on and people looking at you and having that pressure, but I’m trying to embrace it and enjoy it because you don’t know if it will happen again gaming
“gaming Beth Shriever is a really good friend of mine and she’s been the BMX world and Olympic champion gaming
She said she didn’t have the best year in the rainbow jersey because she put too much pressure on herself and she overthought it gaming
“I’ve spoken to Evie (Richards, 2021 mountain bike world champion) and Katie Archibald (a five-time world champion on the track) and I’m lucky we have so many inspiring women in the Great Britain team gaming
It’s great I can learn from them but ultimately I will only learn from myself and how I deal with it gaming
”And Finucane believes the Champions League – the made-for-TV track cycling series which is in its third season – is the ideal place to do much of that learning, providing some top-level competition without the stresses and pressures that come elsewhere gaming
“The next event I’ll do in the rainbows is the Euros (in January) which is when everything is serious,” she said gaming
“I’m not saying this isn’t serious, but it’s a nice place to be free to fail gaming
You can try new things gaming
”Saturday’s racing in Palma saw Finucane finish second in the sprint, beaten by Germany’s Alessa-Catriona Propster, before failing to make the keirin final through some tired legs gaming
But it was just the sort of experience she was looking for when it came to dealing with her new status gaming
Finucane will wear the stripes into an Olympic year but despite her status is taking nothing, not even squad selection, for granted gaming
“Nothing is guaranteed,” she said gaming
“I’d love to go and I’m really pushing myself but I need to take each race as it comes gaming
If I just think about Paris and everything else goes wrong I’ll not be going gaming
“But it’s in the back of my mind because since I was 10 years old I’ve wanted to ride the Olympics gaming
“As the GB sprint team we’ll not just be going there to ride but we’re looking for medals and I fully believe we have the potential to win gaming
It’s super exciting but also super scary gaming
